Las Lomas vs. Campolindo

Campolindo High School took their undefeated record to Las Lomas Friday for a battle for a DFAL league title.  Both teams came into this game fired up and fought hard all night long.

Campo showed early why they are such an offensive threat when on their second offensive play Cougar Quarterback, Brett Stephens, connected with Receiver, Griffin Piatt, who broke a couple of tackles and went 91 yards for a score.  Both defenses seemed to settle down a bit and forced a few punts.  The Cougars drove down the field mostly by way of a 26 yard gain on a pass from Stephens to Tight End, Vince Graziano, which set up a 22 yard field goal by Campolindo’s #44 (no name given on the roster).  Las Lomas’ offense found its’ stride on their following possession and went on an 11-play, 65 yard drive mostly behind the hard running of Jake Villa along with a few key passes from Quarterback Adam Wood to David Brys and Khirey Carson.  Villa finished the drive with a one yard touchdown run to cut the Campo lead to 10-7.

The Cougars were stopped on their next possession due to a sack by the Knights’ Khirey Carson, and good coverage by their defensive backfield.  Turnovers were the story to end the half.  Las Lomas’ Robby Ow came up with a fumble recovery to set his offensive up with good field position as time wound down on the clock.  However, their opportunity to score was ended when Griffin Piatt came up with a fumble recovery of his own.

The second half began the way the first half had ended, with a turnover by Griffin Piatt.  Only this time he had intercepted his first of two passes of the contest.  Campolindo’s offense drove 48 yards, with 41 of them on the ground, for a score on a 7 yard scramble by Brett Stephens who had 67 rushing yards for the night.  Yet Las Lomas would not back down.  Wood connected with Ardell Romez and Brayton Milner for some big gains as well as some continually strong running by Villa who scored his second touchdown of the game to cut the Cougars lead to three points, 17-14.  Campo’s offense returned and went to work quickly going 88 yards in 1:30.  Stephens hit Connor Rosenbaum out of the backfield for eight yards followed by a 38 yard gain on a pass to Karl Thornton.  Running Back, Reiner Ebarle, rushed 37 yards to cap the Cougars scoring drive.  Griffith Piatt struck again intercepting his second pass of the night giving the Cougars the ball to start the fourth quarter.

Campo turned to their ground game to start the final quarter as they drove 62 yards in five minutes.  This set up another scoring run by Stephens from three yards out extending the lead to 31-14.  The Knights next possession stalled as Sam Peri, Jaime Vega, and CJ Toohey all came up with sacks for the Cougar defense.  Las Lomas’ defense responded forcing a quick three and out with Jake Villa and Tanner Hill coming up with tackles for a loss.  Jackson Miller came in on the Knights’ last possession of the game and lead the team to a score when he hit Brayton Milner from eight yards out.  Miller then connected with David Brys for the two-point conversion.

Campolindo finished their regular season with a perfect 10-0 with the night’s win.  Las Lomas goes to 7-2 with one game left to play in the season.  Both teams look to be true threats in the D-II and D-III post season this year.
